Artist Statement:
Who is David? There are two Davids, me, and “Adagio” by the Italian Baroque componist Tomaso Albinoni (and Remo Giazotto). In this piece, David Garett is playing Adagio. He is a handsome young man, a musician, a star, a King? I look at him and I realize: No more gorgeous young man for me in this life, too late. With this sad thinking I watch him playing and remember the other David from the Bible: Before becoming a king, he was a shepherd playing his harp. A bad spirit came to King Saul, and he asked for someone to play for him. His servants brought young David... “Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.” (1 Samuel, chapter 16, verse 23)
Ora Ruven’s piece King David plays for Me When I'm Sad explores the socially tabooed topic of female aging. The artist addresses her very personal feelings that come with the process of aging. She expresses the sadness of the old age, and speaks about how music, or painting, could overcome sad thoughts.
